Does dry wood furniture need to be treated before staining? I'm getting ready to finish an old outdoor glider/bench. The wood is VERY dry. Should I rub this down with some kind of furniture oil before trying to stain it? The wood is so dry it is starting to crack a little in some places, and the surfaces are kind of textured.

How do you clean fingerprints off wood furniture? I have a new piece of furniture with a matte finish, that quickly developed some fingerprint marks. I used the wrong product on it, and it only polished the fingerprint marks, while the rest of the wood kept it's matte finish. I've tried Murphy's Oil Soap and even it won't clean the shiny spots. There are some great straight sections that I was thinking about cutting up with a chain saw and them taking them to the local saw mill. After this wood leaves the saw mill, how long will it take for the moisture level to fall to an appropiate level to use the wood for furniture?
